Genesis 22 - Jesus' Death For Our Salvation

God Tested Abraham

Two things are happening in the testing of Abraham we find in Genesis 22:
  • First, God is showing how Abraham's faith has grown in the past 25 years.
    • Remember, our faithfulness doesn't move God's hand. Rather, God's hand moves us to faithfulness. Abraham has made many mistakes trying to "help God" over the years to fulfill His promises.
    • At this point, Abraham has learned his lessons and fully trusts God regardless how painful the request to offer his son may be.
  • Second, God is giving a foretaste of His future salvation that will bless every nation.
    • Indeed, a beloved Son will be sacrificed in substitution for our sins.
    • His name is Jesus whose story would directly reflect Genesis 22 some 2000 years later.

The Sacrifice of A Son

  • History is "His - Story." God is telling His story through the narrative of Abraham and his son, Isaac.
  • God always lets His people know what is going to happen before it actually happens. — 2 Peter 1:16-21
  • Look upon a sample of the similarities between the sacrifice of Isaac and Jesus...
    • A FATHER WILLINGLY OFFERS HIS BELOVED SON — Genesis 22:2; John 3:16
    • BOTH HAD 3-DAY JOURNEY IN SAME PLACE — Genesis 22:4; Matt. 16:21
    • BOTH SONS BORN WITH DIVINE INTERVENTION — Genesis 18:11; Isaiah 7:14
    • BOTH SONS LAID UPON THE WOOD — Genesis 22:9; Mark 15:24
    • A SON WILLINGLY FOLLOWS HIS FATHER TO BE SACRIFICED — Genesis 7-8; Luke 22:42
    • BLOOD WAS SHED — Genesis 22:13; Matt. 26:28
    • BOTH SADDLED DONKEYS — Genesis 22:3; Mark 11:7
    • BOTH SONS CARRIED WOOD — Genesis 22:6; John 19:17
    • THE LORD PROVIDED — Genesis 22:14; I Peter 2:24
    • SACRIFICE PROVIDED BLESSING FOR ALL — Genesis 22:18; Gal. 3:14
