There and Back Again | Part 34

Genesis 28 - Stairway To Heaven

God Is Active and Present

  • Jacob's dream of the stairway was a powerful sign that heaven and earth were connected by God's presence.
  • The stairway showed that God was not distant but actively involved in the lives of His people.
  • The angels moving up and down the stairway reminded Jacob that God was always at work, carrying out His plans and watching over him.
  • In the dream, God renewed His covenant and promised to give Jacob the land, many descendants, His constant presence, and His protection.
  • This happened while Jacob was running from his past, showing that God's grace comes before we deserve it.
  • The dream changed an ordinary place into holy ground and gave Jacob confidence that he was not alone.
  • It also pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who is the true bridge between heaven and earth and the only way people can come into a relationship with God.

The House Of God

  • Bethel, meaning "House of God," holds profound significance in the Bible as a place where God revealed Himself to His people.
  • Jacob will return here with his family to experience God's presence once more. — Genesis 35
  • Over time, however, Bethel became associated with idolatrous worship after Jeroboam, who split Israel into two kingdoms, established a golden calf there, turning it into a center of religious corruption. — 1 Kings 12:28-33
  • The prophet Hosea condemned this tragic transformation, often referring to Bethel as "Beth-aven" ("House of Wickedness" or "House of Vanity") to emphasize its spiritual apostasy.
  • Hosea also recalled Jacob's encounter with God at Bethel, contrasting the faithfulness God desired with Israel's unfaithfulness. — Hosea 12:3-6
  • Through Hosea's message, Bethel stands as both a reminder of God's covenantal presence and a sobering example of how a place of true worship can be corrupted when people abandon wholehearted devotion to the Lord.
