These Are The Generations
- Hebrew "toledot" meaning "generated from, origin"
- English term "Genesis" derives from this word
- Emphasizes Genesis as history and not poetry/myth
- Organizes Genesis into 10 sections
- Heavens & Earth (2:4) / Adam (5:1)
- Noah (6:9) / Noah's Sons (10:1)
- Shem (11:10) / Terah/Abraham (11:27)
- Ishmael (25:12) / Isaac (25:19)
- Esau (36:1, 9) / Jacob (37:2)
God Is Personal
- Hebrew "Elohim" is translated "God" throughout the Old Testament.
- Genesis 2:4 is the first time we see the personal name of God in the Bible.
- When you see "LORD" in all caps, it is in reference to "Yahweh/Yehova."
- God doesn't speak man into existence. He personally forms Adam from the dust and Eve from Adam's rib.
God's Design for Human Life
- God made male and female, both, in HIs image and likeness — Genesis 1:27
- The only "not good" statement is about man being alone.
- "Helper" is not derogatory. God calls Himself our "Helper." — Psalm 54:4; John 15:26
- Adam sings the first love song when he sees Eve. — v. 23
- Marriage is a reason to leave parents (who we are to honor.)
- One flesh: to enjoy and to be productive.
