There and Back Again | Part 3

Man and Woman

These Are The Generations

  • Hebrew "toledot" meaning "generated from, origin"
  • English term "Genesis" derives from this word
  • Emphasizes Genesis as history and not poetry/myth
  • Organizes Genesis into 10 sections
  • Heavens & Earth (2:4) / Adam (5:1)
  • Noah (6:9) / Noah's Sons (10:1)
  • Shem (11:10) / Terah/Abraham (11:27)
  • Ishmael (25:12) / Isaac (25:19)
  • Esau (36:1, 9) / Jacob (37:2)

God Is Personal

  • Hebrew "Elohim" is translated "God" throughout the Old Testament.
  • Genesis 2:4 is the first time we see the personal name of God in the Bible.
  • When you see "LORD" in all caps, it is in reference to "Yahweh/Yehova."
  • God doesn't speak man into existence. He personally forms Adam from the dust and Eve from Adam's rib.

God's Design for Human Life

  • God made male and female, both, in HIs image and likeness — Genesis 1:27
  • The only "not good" statement is about man being alone.
  • "Helper" is not derogatory. God calls Himself our "Helper." — Psalm 54:4; John 15:26
  • Adam sings the first love song when he sees Eve. — v. 23
  • Marriage is a reason to leave parents (who we are to honor.)
  • One flesh: to enjoy and to be productive.
