There and Back Again | Part 2

The Seventh Day

God Makes Sabbath Special

  • Only day that is blessed and consecrated by God.
  • God doesn't need to take a nap. — Isaiah 40:28; Psalm 121:4
  • Given for God's people to rest in a restless world and grow in faith of God's provision and sovereignty. — Exodus 16:23-30
  • Commanded by God to be remembered. — Exodus 20:8-11
  • Sabbath is a gift to man. — Mark 2:27

God's People Miss The Point

Mishnah
Oral tradition of the Jews eventually written down and codified in the 3rd Century AD records 39 categories of laws on how to not break the Sabbath including:
  • No cooking, because to light a fire is considered work.
  • No spitting, because it could cause a trench or furrow in the ground... which is considered work.
  • No walking more than 2000 cubits (3000 ft / 0.59 miles).
As a result, it became a lot of work to keep the Sabbath!

Sabbath Is Now a Person

Jesus is our rest. — Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 4:8-16
Don't get caught up in religious days. — Colossians 2:16-19
