There and Back Again | Part 10

Devastation and Re-Creation

Noah And The Flood

  • This text is the third section in the "toledot/generations" formula of the book of Genesis. It covers the span of Noah's life and how God miraculously saved he and his family from the just and righteous cleansing of wickedness from the earth.
  • God creates everything good, mankind sinned and brought devastation, so God generates a clean slate and new beginning for mankind. He still does today!

Interesting Facts

  • Studying the wrath of God towards the unrighteous is heartbreaking. However, it often leads to revival — (Jonathan Edwards preaching "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.")
  • The flood narrative is told in chiastic parallelism, or an A-B-B-A pattern, with the emphasis being the center of the narrative which is focused on the Grace of God for Noah.
  • Scripture tells us Noah was 500 years old when he had his sons (5:32) and 600 when the flood began (7:11). Most scholars believe it took Noah and his sons somewhere between 55 and 75 years to build the Ark.
  • Noah, his family, and the animals were on the Ark 370 days.
  • Ravens and doves were used through the 19th century to help ships find land.
  • Noah (950 years of age) had the 3rd longest life recorded in Scripture (Methuselah was 969, and Jared was 962).

People Get Ready

  • The Ark is a foreshadowing of the Cross of Christ. Noah and his family experienced Salvation from the wrath of God.
  • As in the days of Noah, this salvation is "TIME SENSITIVE" — Matthew 24:37-38; Luke 17:26-27; 2 Corinthians 6:2
  • Like Noah, by faith, take hold of this salvation and fresh new beginning TODAY — Hebrews 11:7
