Mo' Money, Mo' Problems — vs. 1-7
- Abram has learned the futility of making decisions based on his own fears. He has returned to the land God promised him and is seeking the Lord at the altars he built through faith. — vs. 4
- Both Abram and Lot have become wealthy men. Most people believe wealth solves problems. The reality is that wealth creates tension and conflict with others. — vs. 6-7
- Conflict leads to decisions and choices that must be made. It is these decisions that reveal the character of both Lot and Abram. Lot chooses based on what he sees, while Abram relies on his faith in the Lord to lead and direct
Him. - We live in a fantastic country. Even if we don't feel like we have much, compared to the rest of the world, we are quite wealthy. How should we respond when success creates tension in relationships?
Results of Faith — vs. 8-13
- Abram's faith is revealed through his peace-making and humility in dealing with his nephew Lot. Abram seeks peace instead of power. He gives Lot the first choice of the land while he simply trusts in the Lord and puts his future in the hands and will of God.
- Abram values unity with his nephew over any personal advantage he can work out for himself.
Lift Up Your Eyes — vs. 14-18
- After the selfless decision making of Abram, God reaffirms His promise.
- Lot had "lifted his eyes" to see the best land and choose to possess it. — vs. 10
- Abram settles the land left by Lot when God tells him to "lift up your eyes." — vs. 14
- God creates future blessing and sustenance where human sight could see none. Abram receives reassurance and expanded promises from the Lord as a result of his faith. This Biblical truth is still very real for us today.
- When we trust God, He handles the outcome! Are we willing to wait on God instead of rushing ahead with what we think is best?
