There and Back Again | Part 49

Genesis 35 - Starting Over

Begin Again

  • Genesis 34 is an absolute dumpster fire of human sin. Dinah is violated, Jacob's sons respond with deception and violence, an entire city is slaughtered, and Jacob's family is left surrounded by fear, anger, and the consequences of their own actions.
  • It's a picture of a family that has lost its way. In the middle of all that mess, Genesis 35 begins with God speaking to Jacob: "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there.” — Genesis 35:1
  • God calls Jacob back to the place where their story began, where Jacob first encountered Him and received His promises.
  • Before Jacob can move forward, he needs to return to the place where he remembers who God is and what God has said.
  • Jacob builds an altar and marks the place, creating a reminder of God's faithfulness in his life.
  • We need those spiritual markers, too. We need moments when we stop, look back, and remember the times God met us, carried us, corrected us, and remained faithful even when we made a mess of things.
  • Going back doesn't mean pretending the past was perfect or that our failures don't matter. It means recognizing that our failures don't have to define our future.
  • Sometimes, when life has become a mess and we've wandered farther than we realize, the grace of God calls us back to the beginning.
This is not to leave us there, but to remind us who He is so we can move forward with Him.
  • You may not be able to change the mess behind you, but by God's grace, you can return to Him and begin again.

God Almighty

  • In the middle of Jacob's mess, God reveals Himself as El Shaddai, God Almighty (Genesis 35:11), reminding Jacob that His plans are not dependent on Jacob's ability to get everything right.
  • The same God who made promises to Abraham and Isaac now reaffirms those promises to Jacob.
  • Jacob's failures have not erased God's faithfulness, and his circumstances have not diminished God's power.
  • This is the same Gospel truth we carry today in Christ Jesus!
