Timeline
- We are still in the context of the explanation of the generation of the heavens and the earth (Genesis 2:4). This means this is big picture, 30,000 ft. view reality. The generations of Adam are not revealed until Genesis 5:1. It is clear from the text that many years are passing by in Genesis 4. Cain and Abel are born as babies, but grow up into their careers before our eyes.
- Other children are born by Adam and Eve during this time, but are not mentioned as the focus is on "seed" of Eve that brings forth the Messiah, which will come through Seth (Luke 3:38).
Why Was Cain's Offering Not Accepted?
Genesis 4 does not provide details for us, but the New Testament does. Jude 11 tells us that the way of Cain is like:
- Balaam's Error: greed, love of gain — Numbers 22
- Korah's Rebellion: pride — Numbers 16
- Abel worshipped in faith, but Cain was just performing religious rituals because it was expected of him. — Hebrews 11:4
- Cain was evil and hated his righteous brother. — 1 John 3:11-15
