Genesis 29 - What Goes Around Comes Around

The Gate And The Shepherd

  • In Genesis 29:1-3, Jacob comes to a well where shepherds gather with their flocks, waiting for the stone to be removed so the sheep can drink.
  • This picture points us to Jesus, who said, "I am the door of the sheep" (John 10:7) and "I am the good shepherd. “ — John 10:11
  • Just as sheep knew the voice of their shepherd and followed him, Jesus' sheep recognize His voice and follow Him. — John 10:3-4
  • Through Christ, the true Gate, we are given access to God's provision, protection, and the living water that leads to eternal life. — John 10:9; John 4:13-14

Kissing And Weeping

  • Genesis 29:10-11 reveals Jacob was not as big of a momma's boy as we may have previously thought. He finds a way to remove the large stone from the mouth of the well by himself so Rachel can bring her sheep to the water. Then Jacob kisses Rachel and begins weeping.
  • Remember, Jacob has been alone on a long journey through the wilderness. His tears are tears of joy that God has been faithful and led him to the promised destination of his grandfathers people.
  • Like other examples in the Old Testament, this is not a romantic kiss, but a kiss of kinship, affection, and deep emotions. — Genesis 27:26-27; 33:4; 45:15, Exodus 4:27

The Deceiver Is Deceived

  • There is a reason the saying "what goes around comes around" exists. We see it fully here in verses 21-26.
  • The similarities of Jacob and Laban's deception are striking:
    • Both are situated around an older and younger sibling.
    • Both involve an intentional covering/disguise of the truth.
    • In both cases the truth is not discovered until it is too late.
  • Jacob is forced to experience the very kind of betrayal he once inflicted on others.
  • Jesus reminds us of this hypocrisy in our sinful nature when He teaches, "why do you see the speck in your brothers eye but do not see the log in your own.” — Matthew 7:3-5
  • Yet, it is in Christ that deceivers and the deceived alike might receive forgiveness, redemption, and a new identity by faith in Him.
